The hobbit is a great modern classic and the prelude to The lord of the rings.
Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely travelling any further than his pantry or his cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf, and a company of dwarves, arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo is most reluctant to take part in this quest, but he surprises even himself by his resourcefulness and his skill as a burglar.
This edition, published to mark the 70th anniversary of first publication, includes a foreword by Christopher Tolkien.
The cover of this edition of The hobbit reproduces Tolkien's own dustjacket design for the first edition. Tolkien's wish that the sun and the dragon be red was dropped originally because of cost, and the final cover was printed in just blue, green and black. The wraparound painting was designed along the long road (on the spine) through the forest to the Lonely Mountain. On the back are night, darkness, and the evil dragon, in contrast to day, light and the good eagles seen on the front.

Mon avis :
Ma lecture de l'année en anglais, encore honteusement piquée parmi mes proches... Décidément je suis une sale voleuse de livres (mais je les rends toujours après, faut pas abuser non plus).
En soi le style assez simple, presque parlé, rend le livre assez facile à lire. C'est comme si, comme on nous le dit dans la préface, l'auteur racontait l'histoire à ses enfants. Par contre je la trouve personnellement un peu glauque cette histoire ! Certains passages sont parfaits pour filer des cauchemars... Puis il y a bien sûr quelque chose de malsain avec cet anneau, mais là ceux qui ont vu l'ensemble (ou même une partie) de la filmographie le savent déjà, et si ce n'est pas encore fait je ne peux plus rien pour vous !
Malgré la simplicité du texte (en dehors des problèmes habituels de vocabulaire quand on ne lit pas dans sa langue), je n'ai pas trop accroché et j'ai eu pas mal de difficultés à me laisser emporter par l'histoire. Le rythme des chapitres ne convient pas vraiment pour faire de courtes sessions de lecture, ce qui me gène toujours un peu. La fin m'a paru plus sympa que le début, sans doute parce qu'on se retrouve enfin devant ce dragon dont on entend parler depuis le début !
